Small 4to, 20 x 16 cm, title page with engraved border,a4-v4. missing the gatherings s-s4 A work of outstanding importance in the history of mathematics, which perhaps more than any other influenced the teaching of this science in the sixteenth century. It deals with commercial arithmetic, algebra and geometry. The symbology expressed in the title is fascinating: as in order to attack a fortress you need a ladder and a lock pick, so in approaching mathematics you need this treatise.
Later binding with some defects,showing sign of worms on th boards ,later venetian flyleaves,first blank a bit loose, some pages have some wormings and holes, but still possible to read.Written in Italian with numerous graphics and calculations.The usual foxing .thumbing and smudges from a book dated 1550, but still possible to read.
Riccardi III, 22. Smith, Rare Arithmetica pp.144-49 '' highly esteemed as a textbook for schools.More complete than the Treviso book, more modern than Borghi, more condensed than Paciolo, few books had greater influence.
