Medal due to the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Made of bronze. Made by Maximilian-Kolbe-Werk association. Maximilian-Kolbe-Werk (The Work of Maximilian Kolbe) is an association founded by German Catholic activists which aim is to help ghetto victims and former prisoners of German concentration camps.
The origins of the organization are connected with the departure of a group of Germans from the Pax Christi movement to Auschwitz in May 1964. At that time they met with former prisoners of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The living conditions in which the victims of the Third Reich functioned prompted a group led by Alfonso Erb to hold a fundraiser. In 1973, the shares were transformed into an association. Maximilian Maria Kolbe became the organization's patron. Maximilina-Kolbe-Werk was president of Werner Remmers.
In 2007, thanks to the financial support of the Polish and German episcopacy, the members of the association founded the Maximilian Kolbe Foundation.
In 2000, the association received the Polish-German Award for special services to the development of relations between the two countries, and in 2008 it was awarded the Königstein City Award by Eugen Kogon.
