The sword was intended to be a versatile tool and weapon, used for all purposes: as a hatchet, machete or knife. In 1853, the Austrian army adopted a new edged weapon for its technical troops, the pioneer troops sabre, 1853 model. It replaced the earlier 1847 model, which had shown inconsistent quality and durability in the field. Horn hilt with 2 grip plates, straight cross-guard with serial number ‘89 B 116’, strong blade with 1 cutting edge and 1 fuller on one side, marked at the heel ‘Es. Jung’ with the date 1856 and the Austrian eagle. Leather-covered wooden sheath with 2 steel trims decorated with filigree.
