An exceptional and very rare pair of Early 17th (XVII), century circa 1610 Italian oil paintings on alabaster.
They are both painted on alabaster and are each in their original gilt wood frames which also date to the 17th century. They both depict religious saints. The first one is of Saint Mary Magdalene Penitent repenting for all her sins. The second painting is of Saint Anthony the great holding the Tau Cross and The Hoy Bible. Both saints are placed beneath garlands for flowers surrounding them. The paintings have been completed by a very skilled artist featuring vibrant colours with very realistic features and details.
The technique of painting on alabaster is a rare one; unlike other materials such as metal, canvas and wooden panel. This is because at the time, alabaster was a precious and expensive material to use. The surviving pieces are rare due to their fragile nature.
You won't find another pair like them.
Overall, the paintings are in very good condition, the frames do show some signs of usage and ageing however, please expect this as these pieces are over 400 years old.
Total size including frame: 22.5 x 19.5 cm
