FBM (acronym of Fabbrica Bolognese Motocicli) is a company for the production of mopeds born in Bologna in 1951 and founded by Franco Morini, grandson of Alfonso Morini, and by Vittorio Minarelli; two technicians who will prove to be the most successful Italian entrepreneurs in the field of the ‘two-stroke’ production since the post-war period.
In 1955, considering the general appreciation for motorisations and the many small manufacturers-assemblers that were born in those years, FBM decided to produce 175 cm³ Otto cycle engines to be supplied to third parties, and especially 50 cm³ two-stroke engines. The ‘Pettirosso’ was born; a wire-controlled two-speed 2-stroke engine, destined to become the most popular moped engine in Europe.
Towards the end of 1956, the founders decided to split up following never settled ‘differences’, probably due to the clear difficulties of coexistence, in a single company, of two similar technical and entrepreneurial talents.
