Vhils is interested in walls steeped in history, yet neglected. Instead of adding successive layers, he decides to “retirer pour révéler... “. Through his work “Scratching the Surface”, he sculpts portraits of anonymous people on sections of walls in the city, and thus restores value to these neglected walls. Before starting his sculpture work, the artist sketches his portraits with painting. It is with the help of chisel, stinging hammer and other utensils that he begins to scratch the surface of the wall, to reveal successively the different layers that constitute it. Little by little, a portrait is revealed. Through his work, the artist then gives an identity to the wall. His works show the close relationship between the city and its inhabitants, how the city shapes its inhabitants and how the inhabitants sculpt the city. But his work is not limited to walls. The artist explores and experiments with other techniques and mediums such as acid, explosives, screen printing, portraits carved from a polystyrene block or collages of advertising posters recovered from the streets of the city. All his works still have one thing in common, that of showing the reciprocal influences between a city and its inhabitants.

Alexandre Farto, known as VHILS, grew up in Seixal, an industrialized suburb of Lisbon. He discovered graffiti around the age of 13 and was particularly influenced by the transformations induced by the intensive urban development that the country experienced in the 1980s and 1990s. Between 2007 and 2008, he studied at the University of the Arts in London and then at the Central Saint Martins, Byam Shaw Fine Art Skills and Practices, also in London. In 2008, he gained international recognition at the Cans Festival in London, when one of his works was exhibited next to those of Banksy. Vhils is currently working with the Lazarides gallery in London, Vera Côrtes Agency in Lisbon and the Magda Danysz gallery in Paris and Shanghai. He travels and exhibits all over the world.
