Between 1896 and 1909, the Royal Württemberg State Railways , abbreviated KWStE under whose head of mechanical engineering agencies Eugen Kittel, purchased a total of sixteen similar steam wagons - a unique piece as a model and small each different advanced series - as referred to DW 1-17, where DW stood for steam wagon . They were intended for shorter sidelines in southwestern Germany. The steam wagons of this series equipped with a Kittel boiler are popularly designated, along with other similar steam wagons, as kittel steam wagon.
