Willem Van Dort Sr. "... was born in 1875 into a family of fishermen, who had been based in Bergen op Zoom for centuries. From an early age, he sailed on the ships of his father and brothers, but when he got the opportunity he drew and painted. ... He made a name for himself as a port painter and was seen as an able follower of the Hague School. His work was compared to that of Jozef Israëls, George Hendrik Breitner and Matthijs Maris, but Van Dort was praised for his personal, vibrant, often impetuous, style. "
