Jan Mankes 1889-1920, Milking cow by female farmer, wood cut on paper. Colour black and white. Approximately 1915. Jan Mankes was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. Mankes left behind a body of work of about 150 paintings, mainly small ones, about 100 drawings and about 50 prints. Nature is the most important subject in more than half of his work. He also made self portraits, portraits (especially of his father, his mother and his wife), still lifes, landscapes and interiors. Mankes exhibited a lot during his lifetime and was greatly appreciated.
In the beginning, Mankes mainly painted dark birds in dark shades, later also light coloured, especially white animals such as roosters and rabbits. The Hague art collector and cigar manufacturer Aloysius Pauwels was his patron and he sent him, in addition to materials, often special birds that he could paint.
His work is characterised particularly by a certain silence. In 1923 Richard Roland Holst called Mankes Holland’s most serene painter. This serenity is caused by balanced compositions and a restrained use of colour, as well as a barely visible brush stroke.
His work was exhibited at the Scheringa Museum for Realism. From spring 2015, the collection has been housed in museum MORE, which is located in the (extensive and entirely renovated) former town hall of the Gelderse Gorssel
