Circle-shaped iron Tsuba with Kozuka & Kougai holes

The chrysanthemum flower is designed for this Tsuba. The elongated shapes are evenly spaced; each of them represents a petal of chrysanthemum. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for long life in China, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). This flower symbolizes the fall, and people appreciate it very much since ancient times. As its petals form radially, chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.

Three wild flying geese are engraved at the upper side. The wild goose is a migratory bird that represents fall. Its pattern is also called “Karigane.” It is one of the popular motifs for family crests.
