Förg studied from 1973 until 1979 with Karl Fred Dahme at the Academy of Visual Arts in Munich. His first solo exhibition took place in 1980 at the Munich Gallery Rüdiger of Rüdiger Schöttle. In 1992 Förg was invited to documenta IX in Kassel. From 1992 to 1999 he taught at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe in Karlsruhe. In 1996 he was awarded the Wolfgang-Hahn Prize. From 1999 until his death in 2013 he was professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Munich.
The work style of Förg is included in American Abstract Painting. By combining painting and sculpture with photography, he created complex constructions / installations. His work is represented in many collections.
