This etching is made standing on the Rokin and looking in the direction of the Oudemanhuispoort.
Although the houses on the Grimnessesluis are still there, the view is now thoroughly spoiled by all kinds of structures, which are placed on or by it.

The monochrome etching of the Grimnessesluis is rarely made.
This etching is much sought after.
The etching is signed by the artist in the lower right, in pencil.

Cornelis Brandenburg was born in 1884 in Wormerveer.
In the year 1902, he moved to Amsterdam and studied at the Tekenschool for Kunstambachten.
He worked at “De Distel” in Amsterdam as a painter of pottery.
Thereafter, he concentrated fully on etching and became the most important etcher of the canals of Amsterdam.
He produced over 100 etchings of Amsterdam and the archives of Amsterdam own more than 60 of them.
He died in Amsterdam in 1954.
Of his work a book was published with all his etchings.
