DESCRIPTION

Lot of 6 so-called “Opium” Weights representing a Hintha, a Burmese mythical bird, which is one of the three classical representations used for these weights, together with an elephant and a lion. The set is not homogeneous. The largest one measures 65 mm high, the smallest 28 mm, the total weight is 922 grams; 19th century.

These typical weights from Burma have been used for centuries and are sometimes still used in certain markets of remote villages. These are named “opium weights”, but were actually crafted to weigh all sorts of precious products, gold, silver, medicinal plants, areca nuts, or even simple consumer goods.

CONDITION

Good condition, with some traces of age and wear, magnificent patina of wear.
