Jan Jans was born on January 6,1872 in Amsterdam. He lived in the capital all his life and was an apprentice of Jan Visser jr. (1856-1938). He initially worked as a house and decoration painter, but he established himself as an artist in ca. 1907. He painted along the lines of the Hague School, among other things, landscapes, river views and harbours. Jans was a member of St. Lucas (1910-1925) and of De Onafhankelijken. Much of his work was sold abroad, including in Buenos Aires, where he participated in an exhibition in 1932.
