Two original woodcuts by Frans Masereel (1889-1972) from the series Debout les Morts. Both woodcuts are signed in the plate. One woodcut is additionally monogrammed in pencil FM. The other has a pencil inscription: A mon bon ami P. Jouve.
P. Jouve was a French writer, and poet, also a pacifist. Both were together in Switserland as of 1915 and Frans Masereel illustrated P. Jouve's book Hôtel Dieu, Récits d'Hôpital.
The condition of the woodcuts is fair for their age. Where the woodcut prints had been glued at some stage, the glue, especially round the sides shows through. See the photos. The woodcuts show toning in line with their age.
