The Vienna Secession was an art movement featuring a strong sensuality and aesthetic opulence, in the context of the early 20th-century avant-garde movements.
In 1897, Klimt founded, together with Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Carl Moll, Josef Maria Auchentaller and Josef Hoffmann, the Wiener Sezession (Vienna Secession), also carrying out the project of a magazine-manifesto of the group, Ver Sacrum (Sacred Spring), of which 96 issues were published, until 1903.
Artists of the Secession were a clear adhesion to the ferment of Art Nouveau and Liberty that was conquering Europa, a ‘separation’ from the past towards the future.
Like Edgar Degas, Vassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, Piet Mondrian, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, René Magritte, Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Paul Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse, Rembrandt, Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Constantin Brancusi, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, Gustav Klimt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustav Klimt was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
