Lautrec is said to have gone twenty times to see singer and dancer Marcelle Lender in an 1895 revival of Hervé's operetta Chilpéric.

When his friend Romain Coolus, who could only accompany him six of those times, asked him what the attraction was, he replied: "I just come to see Lender's back. Look closely, you will rarely see something so splendid. "
