In Winter, dead leafs of a Quercus dentata tree (Japanese emperor oak, also Daimyo oak) do not fall until new ones starts to grow in Spring. Thus, since ancient times the kashiwa (oak) has symbolised the continuity, or the propagation of the family through generations.
Due to the healthy growth of vines, the pattern came to symbolize luck, prosperity, and eternity. It is also sometimes used to represent family lineages or legacies.
