The first thing we know about Malick Sidibé's work are the photo reportages, taken at surprise parties organised by young people who loved music and freedom while the country prepared for independence. He opened the "Studio Malick" in Bamako in 1962. Studio portraits made up the bulk of his work. People came from all over the world to have their portrait taken through Bamako's eyes... Noticed at the first Rencontres de la Photographie de Bamako, his work was exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and then in major galleries and museums around the world.
