The Lion of Lucerne.
Late 19th century.
After the original Lion Monument of Lucerne which was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved in 1820-21 by Lukas Ahorn.
It commemorates the Swiss Guard who lost their lives in 1792 in defence of the Tuileries Palace of the French King Louis XVI.
Photos 2 and 4 were added in reference to the original work.
Dimensions = 15 x 11 x 2 cm
Weight: approx. 130 grams
Above the lion is the inscription "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti", "To the Allegiance and Courage of the Swiss".
The dying lion rests with one on a shield with the fleur-de-lis of the French royal family, and in addition another shield carries the coat of arms of Switzerland.
Under the lion the date in Latin (1792).
Beautiful condition with signs of age, has some old signs of woodworm.
