Very beautiful Admiral Fitzroy mercury barometer, baroscope and thermometer in oak cabinet with glass. ca 1900 in its original condition.
Robert Fitzroy, son of Lord Charles, was born in Ampton Hall, Suffolk, in 1805 during his long career he was captain of the HMS Beagle for many years, which gained notoriety during Charles Darwin's expeditions. He rose to the rank of admiral, was elected MP for Durham in 1841, and appointed governor of New Zealand in 1843.
At his retirement from active service in 1850, Fitzroy focussed his attention to the science of meteorology. Among his great achievements is the fact that "the Times" began to print daily weather information. He designed a much improved marine barometer. In 1863, he published his "Weather-Book" which still has value and which laid the foundations for the systematic study of meteorology.
