Rudolf Hausner (1914 - 1995)
was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and important representative of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He is the father of the painter and stage designer Xenia Hausner, the film director Jessica Hausner and the costume designer Tanja Hausner.
Artistically, he was active as a hobby painter, which made Rudolf Hausner enthusiastic about art at a very early age. From 1923 to 1925 he attended the Schubert-Realschule (today Erich Fried Realgymnasium), then the Realgymnasium Schottenbastei in Vienna until 1931.[3] He then began his studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Fahringer and Karl Sterrer.
In 1937 Rudolf Hausner was called up to the Austrian army. In 1938, his painting was banned from exhibition by the Reich Chamber of Culture. In 1941 he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht. It was during this time that he had his formative traumatic log cabin experience in the Russian Tatra Mountains, which he returned to again and again in his later works.
In the 1950s he still had little success as a painter, who was not able to sell his first painting until 1960, and he repeatedly had economic problems. In 1952, Hausner was sentenced to two years in prison for being involved in the Grill affair and for being involved in the fencing of stolen precious metal.
