Elegant ‘Savonarola’ chair in cherry wood, handmade in Florence.
Made in the mid-20th century in Tuscany, Italy.
This is an elegant “Savonarola” chair with hand-carved decorations on the backrest and at the end of both armrests (two lion’s heads).
The chair is foldable: suffice to remove the backrest.
The Savonarola chair is a traditional Italian folding chair with an X-shaped frame, and decorated backrest and armrests.
The term "Savonarola" comes from the name of Jerome Savonarola (1452-1498), an Italian Dominican friar who used this kind of chairs, as you can still see in his cell at the Florentine convent of San Marco, where he lived from 1482 to his death.
Still in excellent condition, with normal signs of ageing.
