This bayonet has a brass mounted hilt with shaped walnut grips and horizontal grooves, held by two steel rivets, with a spring-steel latching arrangement on the right side. The crossguard is iron (steel) and has a screw-type tightening arrangement on the muzzle-ring. The lower quillon is a hooked "blade-breaker" type.
The blade is 575mm long, steel, single-edged, fullered (both sides), with a re-curved or "yataghan-shape." Serial number on the cross-guard appears to be A3 64277. Traces of light surface rusting to all exposed steel parts
The back edge is inscribed with the arsenal, month, and year of manufacture, but this is quite worn. I believe the date to be October 1874, but the blade length indicates the model to be an 1866 Chassepot Bayonet. No scabbard.
