This is a beautifully rare antique pressed glass model of a sphinx of Saint Louis - the first French 19th and 20th century glass house. Saint Louis reportedly exhibited a similar Sphinx at the Centennial World's Fair in 1876. A limited number of these were then manufactured for a short period of time in a few size and colour variations. This is one of the smaller desk-sized versions in frosted glass. Just a fantastic paperweight from the height of the Egyptian revival. It dates from ca. 1870.
It is generally in very good, used condition as depicted with a single very fine and slight wear on the underside in accordance with age.
