Jacques Mels (1899-1974) - Landschapsgezicht

Jacques MELS (1899-1974) was born in Tilburg and was trained as a house painter.
When he was 20, he became a novitiate and was sent to Curaçao when he was 29, where he, under the name Frater M. Caecilianus Mels, taught art at a vocational school.

After almost 40 years and a return to the Netherlands, he became secularised.
From then on, he wanted to devote himself entirely to that other vocation, namely to be a painter, Mels lived in Maastricht, then The Hague and then Epe.

In 1959 he left for Brazil, until 1967 Jacques remained in South America including in Venezuela and Costa Rica, and then returned to his native country.
He passed away in The Hague at 75 years old.

Jacques Mels is predominantly renowned for his somewhat dark and mysterious, dashingly painted South Limburg summer and winter landscapes under fascinating cloudy skies.
His French village views, perhaps somewhat lighter by palette, also have something bleak, as if life doesn’t come easy for the gentle, friendly artist.

The natural talent Jacques Mels has had a short education by Harmen Meurs and Antoon van Welie and was a member of the ‘Apeldoornse Kunstenaarsgenootschap de Kern’. Otherwise, he was a modest einzelgänger.

The painting is in reasonable condition.
