Very finely painted antique Russian icon "Four Mothers of God and Crucifixion" from the second half of the 19th century. Hand-painted with egg tempera colour on a wooden panel with chalk background. Typical method of icon production in the 18th and 19th century of tsarist Russia. The painting is very detailed (see photos). Perfectly matched colour contrasts. Rich, warm colours complete this expressive icon. Depicted are:
- Our Lady of Smolensk
- Mother of God, Assuage My Sorrow
- Mother of God, Joy to All Who Suffer
- Mother of God, Unexpected Joy
The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear and tear in the form of scratches, paint flaking and bumps, especially at the edge (see photos). Minimal restorations are present. The dark brown paint on the edge is coming off and barely sticks to the icon anymore (compare the photo from the expertise and the current condition). Presumably this was subsequently and unprofessionally done. The painting contains age-related craquelure. All saints are labelled. The inscriptions are clearly legible. Sponkis have been attached to the top and bottom. Heavy, solid wooden board.
Please refer to the expertise for more details.
All details are clearly visible in the photos. The photos are part of the description.
