The concept, which emerged from and gained popularity through Chinese Buddhism, features a pair of highly stylised lions - often a male with a ball and a female with a cub - that were considered to protect a building against harmful spiritual influences and wicked people who could be posing a threat.

Used in imperial Chinese palaces and graves.
