Chinese or imperial guardian lions are a traditional Chinese architectonic ornament.
Generally made of stone, they are also known as stone lions or shishi (石獅 、shíshī).
The concept, which emerged from and gained popularity through Chinese Buddhism, features a pair of highly stylised lions - often a male with a ball and a female with a cub - that were considered to protect a building against harmful spiritual influences and wicked people who could be posing a threat.
Used in imperial Chinese palaces and graves.
