Set of four Maui chairs by Vico Magistretti for Kartell, Italy, 1990s.
Summary of the product:
The Maui chairs are one of the best-known designs of Italian designer Vico Magistretti. They were designed at the time when Vico Magistretti worked for the Italian company Kartell. The chairs are made of polypropylene with a chrome plated steel frame. You could buy them brand new at Kartell, but these chairs were originally made in the 1990s and are therefore vintage!
Vico Magistretti was born on 6 October 1920 in Milan, Italy. He was the son of an architect. To avoid deportation to Germany, he left Italy on 8 September 1943 during his military service and moved to Switzerland. While in the country, he taught at the local university and took courses at the Champ Universitaire Italien in Lausanne.
After graduating, he worked in the firm of his father, Pier Giulio, with the architect Paolo Chessa.
He initially worked in urban planning in Milan. In the 1950s, he entered the field of mass-produced furniture and lamps. Some became museum pieces. He worked for the following companies, among others: Artemide, Cassina, De Padova, Flou, Fritz hansen, Kartell, Schiffini.
According to The Guardian: 'His first great success came with the world-famous Carimate chair, produced by the Cassina company. The chair was a bestseller for years, blending rural simplicity (the straw of the seat) with urban sophistication. There were the flowing lines of the wooden supports and legs, the colour, the pop-art bright red frame and elements of Scandinavian design. '
