A small wooden orthodox icon of St. Nikolaj of Mozajsk, Russia, middle 19 centiry.
There is a legend about the defense of Mozhaisk by Nikolai. Following him, Mozhaisk was besieged by enemies, and the inhabitants of the city began to pray to Nicholas the Wonderworker, and suddenly St. Nicholas appeared in the sky above the cathedral in a formidable form - in his right hand he held a sparkling sword, and in his left, as it were, the city of Mozhay, as a sign of his protection. The enemies fled in fear . Since then, Saint Nicholas is considered the patron saint of the city.
