Rusia

The retreat from the Temple of Jerusalem by Joachim and Anna, leaving the Highpriest Zacharia behind after they have brought their sacrifice of doves to the Highpriest to thank God for giving them of their high age a daugther Mary. Joachim and Anna are depicted as an elderly couple in traditional Byzantine garments as is Zacharia. The Temple is painted in a early 17th century Russian style. This icon dating from the end of the 18th century is painted in an old believers workshop, possibly Palech. The cycle of stories about the conception and birth of the Holy Virgin comes from the apocryphical Proto Evangelium of St James, written in the second century AD. Later in the 12th century repeated in the Legenda Aurora of Jacob de Voragine. This icon os is vrezka.
