Very fine late 19th century miniature icon depicting the Mother of God of Kazan, patron saint of the Russian housewives. The prototype of this icon appeared in 1579 in Kazan to a young girl Matrena and quickly worked numerous miracles. Peter the Great brought it with him in 1711 to Petersburg and the colossal Kazansky Sobor on Nevsky Prospect was constructed in her honour. In the second WW the icon was stolen and appeared in the Vatican. It was returned to Russia by Pope Francis. Nice very colourfull icon in good condition.
