Malick Sidibé (1936-2016) - ‘Nouveau-Né’ (1963).
Silver halide print - Signed.
Certified unique print in this size.
Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in April 2016 in Bamako. The first thing we know about Malick Sidibé's work are the photo reportages, taken at surprise parties organised by young people who loved music and freedom while the country prepared for independence.
He opened the ‘Studio Malick’ in Bamako in 1962. Studio portraits made up the bulk of his work. People would come from all over to have their portraits shot by ‘Bamako’s eye’. He attracted notice at the first ‘Rencontres de la Photographie’ in Bamako, then he exhibited at the Cartier Foundation in Paris and in the greatest galleries and museums in the world. He received the Hasselblad prize in 2003 then the Lion d’or in Venice in 2007.
