Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (in latin: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus; in the epigraphs: IMP·CAES·M·AVREL·ANTONINVS·AVG; Rome, 26 April 121 - Sirmium or Vindobona, 17 March 180), better known simply as Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman emperor, philosopher and writer. On the recommendation of Emperor Hadrian, he was adopted in 138 by his future father-in-law and uncle-in-law Antoninus Pius who appointed him heir to the imperial throne.
